The Purdue Online Writing Lab

The Purdue Online Writing Lab is one of the best online resources for all aspects of academic writing, including the research process.

It's 100% free and it's kept current — especially the sections covering research and citation. They have style guidelines for MLA, APA , and others.

Source Credibility Checks

A few tools to get you started.

Covers 5 important criteria for judging the credibility of a source: Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, & Purpose. It covers the most basic credibility checks.

You must make a copy of the Doc to use it.

An even better way to determine a sources credibility. It involves opening new browser tabs and searching for information about a source in other places on the web.

The short video is enough to get you started. If you have the time, Yee recommends the longer video which explains more thoroughly.

Rates sources for credibility (factual accuracy) and multiple types of bias. They provide a detailed breakdown of how they arrived at their ratings and are transparent about their funding. This is where Yee starts lateral reading most often; their analysis has proven reliable for many years.

Use the search box at the top for best results.

Citations

Many online citation tools will not work through the district's filters. Try one of these:

***Remember that it is always your responsibility to fill in the information a citation tool misses. (Yee can help with this!)***
