Ridgefield School District is proud to share that Kara Breuer has been recognized with the 2026 College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Adjunct Award from the University of Portland.
This prestigious honor recognizes Kara’s longstanding commitment to higher education, student success, and excellence in teaching. A University of Portland graduate (Class of 1995), Kara has taught in the university’s Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry since 1998, bringing decades of experience, expertise, and passion to her work.
In addition to her role in Ridgefield School District, Kara has made a significant impact at the university level by helping shape and enhance laboratory curriculum. Her work alongside faculty colleagues has contributed to the development of engaging, rigorous lab experiences, including expanding upper-division experiments through her expertise as an environmental chemist.
Kara is widely recognized for her ability to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment while maintaining high expectations for students. She consistently receives outstanding feedback from students, who praise her clear communication, encouragement, and ability to make complex concepts approachable. Colleagues similarly note her commitment to fostering a positive and engaging classroom experience rooted in both scientific rigor and student care.
Beyond the classroom, Kara has also contributed to undergraduate research, serving as a faculty leader on the Pollentia Undergraduate Research Expedition in Mallorca, Spain. Through this work, she has helped students apply classroom learning to real-world research while also building connections between higher education and K–12 learning experiences.
