This school year, Sunset Ridge Intermediate School introduced a new program called the Mileage Club, encouraging fifth and sixth graders to get active and set personal fitness goals. Started in November by staff member Renae Walker, the program invited students to run laps during their second recess, with four laps equaling one mile. Students received one punch per day on their Mileage Club punch cards for completing the distance.
A total of 200 students joined the club—107 fifth graders and 93 sixth graders—racking up laps throughout the school year. Fifth grader Laban Simons led the pack with an impressive total of more than 100 miles run! He dedicated his afternoon recess each day to reaching his goal.
“I am super proud of all our students that have joined this program,” said Renae Walker. “Especially proud of our top individual for showing such determination for going the distance!”
The Mileage Club helped students stay active, set goals, and build resilience, and it’s safe to say it went the extra mile in its first year.
