South Ridge staff receive arts grant

At the end of last school year, South Ridge counselor Anna Moskal submitted a grant request to help the school fund the "Peace Ornaments" project, and it was selected for one of the 2022 California Casualty Music and Arts Grants! Our application was one of hundreds they received across the country.

South Ridge piloted this project last year and we are excited to continue this year as well. Through the collaboration with our art teacher Heather Fukuchi, our students had a chance to decorate a small circular wooden ornament, or a "peace ornament" during the months of November and December. The goal of this art project was to spread peace throughout our school and community during the holiday season.

While working on the project, students were encouraged to reflect on the following questions:
1. What is peace?
2. What have YOU done to help create a more peaceful community?
3. What can kids do to help create a more peaceful community?

Students also read the book Maybe Something Beautiful written by Isabel Campoy and Theresa Howell. With this grant, we'll be able to purchase the ornaments, and each K-4 student will get to decorate it and take it home to help spread peace throughout the community.!
